I have been out of hospital for over a week now and am recovering well from the operation to remove a tumour that I have had growing on my face for the last 2 years.
The operation itself lasted 5 hours and all of the cancer was removed with only small damage to some of the nerves.(which will all return to normal in time)
The reason I am posting this here is that I would like to take the chance to speak of the importance of not ignoring any lumps, bumps, moles or general changes in the body. Whether its been something that has appeared recently or something you have had for a while,if you havent had it checked out professionally please, please do so. My lump started less then the size of a pea, which is why I never paid any attention to it. Over 2 years it continued to grow and I continued to ignore it. Even when it became noticeable to others I would make excuses rather then get it checked out by a doctor. Almost a very costly mistake on my part.
When given the news about having cancer it hit pretty hard. I kept turning over in my head the what ifs. What if I had gone to get it seen to earlier, what If I just left it, and what if this is a terminal thing.
As I sit here with half of my face paralysed I see myself as lucky. It could have been worse.
Now If I can avoid anyone of you going through the feeling of helplessness and fear that I suffered then Im going to do it and keep doing it. The old " Itll never happen to me" line is bunkum. I used it myself many times. and as luck would have it I picked up one of the rarest strains of head and neck cancer in the UK. So it is possible for anyone to get cancer and early detection matters. Once again, any lumps, bumps moles or changes in the bodies functions may not mean much to you at first but whats to lose by going for a check up with the doctor? These things will rarely mean you have cancer but ruling it out properly is a wise move, whatever way you look at it.
